The Kickin Grass Band is saddened by the passing of Earl Scruggs and thankful for his life and work. He was an inspiration to every member of our band and family. His pioneering musical art form lead to a progressive style of banjo playing that has encouraged countless others to play American Roots music. Because of this we need not worry about the future of this musical genre. Here’s to keeping bluegrass moving forward while celebrating the history and the traditioins of the music for we believe this is what Earl would want! We will miss you.

North Carolina Bluegrass Favorite to Host 10th AnniversaryShow at the Carolina Theatre of Durhamon January 14, 2012.
Durham, NC – One of the Triangle’s most well-loved bands, The Kickin Grass Band, celebrates ten years of signature Americana-style bluegrass with a special hometown concert and celebration on Saturday, January 14, 2012 at the Carolina Theatre of Durham. The show is a co-presentation of The Carolina Theatre of Durham and Pinecone – the Piedmont Council of Traditional Music.
The Kickin Grass Band 10th Anniversary Show will feature the current lineup performing favorites from three acclaimed albums over the past decade, as well as new material slated for a 2012 release. The audience will also be treated to appearances by past members and old friends, including the world-renowned Apple Chill Cloggers.
“The past ten years have been a true joy for us, playing and introducing our rootsy-Americana style of bluegrass to new fans around the world,”says lead singer and songwriter, Lynda Dawson. “We‘re thrilled to share the stage with old friends and celebrate this milestone with hometown fans who have played a huge role in our success!”
The Kickin Grass Band formed in early 2002 as the accompanying band for the Apple Chill Cloggers and went on to release three albums of original and traditional music showcasing their grasp of tradition as well as aspirit of adventuring into the new frontier of an ever-evolving Americana genre: Backroads (2003), On the Short Rows (2006), and The Kickin Grass Band (2008). A fourth album is slated for 2012 featuring the current lineup and an array of new material to keep listeners along for the adventuresome ride.
The show will be recorded by F/Stop Grooves and 5×5 Photography for video production.

WILKESBORO, N.C. (November 1, 2011) — MerleFest 25, presented by Lowe’s and slated for April 26 – 29, 2012, is proud to announce the initial lineup for the music festival’s 25th year. The four-day event, which USA Today described as a “happy, family friendly festival that’s loved by musicians who come to play and those who come to add their energy by listening, as well,” will once again take place on the campus of Wilkes Community College in Wilkesboro, North Carolina. MerleFest is an annual homecoming of musicians and music fans, gathering to celebrate the memory of musician Eddy Merle Watson, beloved son of American music icon Doc Watson.
The initial lineup reflects the diversity and quality of performers that have become the hallmark of the four-day festival. MerleFest is known for its unique mix of traditional, roots-oriented music from the Appalachian region, including bluegrass and old-time music, and expanded to include Americana, blues, country, Celtic, Cajun, cowboy, zydeco, rock and many other styles that Doc Watson has referred to as “traditional plus.”
“This year’s initial lineup will bring back a little nostalgia for the core MerleFest audience, those fans who return year after year to hear the traditional sounds of roots music. We have some of the leading names in the music industry, of today and yesteryear, lined up to perform at the historic 25th festival,” says Ted Hagaman, director of the festival. “The MerleFest 25 lineup is made up of many of the artists who have helped make this festival the premier, internationally-recognized event that it has become. The Kickin Grass Band is thrilled to be playing the 12th Annual Desert Bluegrass Festival in Tuscon, Arizona. We arrive Friday October 28th to judge the band competition, play two sets on Staurday, hold a songwriters workshop and play one last set Sunday before heading back to Raleigh, just in time for Halloween! Boo!
We are also pleased to announce that Pine Cone (Piedmont Council for Traditional Music) and The Carolina Theatre in Durham are our partners in hosting the Kickin Grass Band 10 Year Anniversary Event January 14th at the Carolina Theatre! We are excited to be playing the Shakori Hills Grassroots Festival tomorrow, October 7th at 5:15pm. We will play on the Grove Stage. This is a wonderful music festival held twice a year in beautiful Chatham County, NC. We hope to see you there! Also, Lynda will be playing a childrens set at the Dance Tent with her new project Little Root at 3:00pm.

We have been hard at work on our upcoming album and have cut 10 songs so far with more to do. Jerry Brown at The Rubber Room in Chapel Hill, NC has been great to work with, as always! We are trying out our new material at upcoming shows so be sure to come out and let us know what you think!

The Kickin Grass Band is heading North again this weekend, waaaayyyyyy North! We are happy to headline the 1st Annual Calgary Bluegrass Festival in Alberta, Canada. It should be a great time had by all! We are sad to miss the fun and excitement of earthquakes, hurricanes and 100 degree heat here in North Carolina but are sure it will all be waiting for us when we return!
